Research Notes: Following information received from Deborah Ann Chenier in an e-mail 3 Mar 2001:
Joseph and Melina's firstborn was daughter Melina who married Joseph Corbeil. Joseph Chenier, Sr. (ID.No. 1854) owned both The Leland and The Pioneer Hotels in Darrington. Melina and Joseph Corbeil operated The Leland for him. Permelia married Henry Keenan and they operated The Pioneer Hotel for him. There is a lot of info in a little book from Darrington called "Darrington, Mining Town/Timber Town" that is available at the drugstore there. It was written by Elizabeth S. Poehlman. I haven't been able to find much on Marie Dorina or Rose Eva although I visited them in Calif. in the early 1980's. Rose Eva married a Jack Frye and Marie Dorina married a MacDowell. We used to call him Uncle Mac. The first recorded baptism of a family member in the Darrington area was of Marie Dorina Chenier, August 25, 1895. Joseph Chenier Jr., my grandfather was a carpenter and had a ranch. Hope some of this is helpful. Regards, Debbie (Chenier) Crenshaw.
Additional information from Mike Potaski 3 Mar 2001 e-mail: Hi Debbie:
By way of intro, my mother is née Garand and I am collaborating with some 'cousins' in developing a descending genealogy from Pierre who migrated to New France in the 17th century.
I had exchanged a bit of correspondence with Ron some time ago and recently stumbled upon his web page. Naturally, curiosity got the better of me and I scrolled through it--no mean task, there's a ton of data there.
Anyway, Joseph's entry caught my eye with its US connection. I was at the archives in DC last weekend and barely had time take a quick look at the index. There was a double counting of the family in 1880 with the more complete and evidently accurate enumeration in Seattle.
I took a look at the film of the full enumeration yesterday and found the information below.
So, Marie Dorina and Rose Eva married and moved to California. A lot of California birth and death data are available online through rootsweb.com, have you looked at it? I expect to get back to the archives next Saturday and will have a look in the census for the Keenan and Frye families--assuming we've dug out from the northeaster that is going to hit us tonight through Tuesday morning. Dorina evidently was not married until after 1920 and the 1930 census is not yet publicly available. Mike
Additional information from Mike Potaski March 04, 2001. Subject: Another look at the census Ron:
I had a chance today to take a look at the actual enumeration vice the index which I saw last week. At 1607 Seventh Avenue in Seattle (King Cty ED 101,sheet 2) Joseph Chenier b. Sep 1854 in Canada wife Melina b. Aug 1857 in Canada dau Parmelia b. Nov 1873 in Canada son Joseph b. Apr 1877 in Canada son Wilfred b. Oct 1878 in Canada dau Dorina b. Jun 1895 in WA dau Rose Eva b. Sep 1896 in WA Joseph's mother Mary Louise b Feb 1827 in Canada
Joseph and Melina declared they were married 27 Years and had had 8 children with 6 still living (one either married or living elsewhere given only 5 enumerated) Marie Louise declared she had had 2 children with 1 still living. In the 1910 enumeration they were living in Darrington Precinct of Snohomish Cty ED 273, sheet 6A. Parmelia was no longer in the family but Melina declared 6 children living so she was likely married. Joseph senior was working as a hotel manager, Joseph junior had some sort of job (garbled in record) in "timber lands" and Wilfred was a saloon clerk. The entire family migrated to the States in 1883. In 1920 Snohomish ED 125 Sh 2 had Joseph Senior, Melina, and Dorina. Rose Eva probably married by then and Marie Louise probably died between 1910 and 1920. In same ED sheet 3, line 14 Joseph junior living with his wife Judith E. who was born in North Carolina. Same ED, sheet 2, line 100 Wilfred was living alone. The two Josephs and Wilfred all indicated they were naturalized in 1891. The court records are on microfilm in the Archives but a quick glance suggests a lot of disorder so I did not look into the naturalization records. Mike.

LEON JR CHENIER'S MYSTERIOUS SECOND MARRIAGE
A mystery seems to exist for the second marriage of Léon Chénier, son of Léon Chénier and Sophie Josephine Lalonde.
Léon Chénier Jr’s first marriage with Malvina Lalonde, daughter of Luc Lalonde & Marcelline Desloges produced 12 children. All children’s records indicate at their baptism their parents were: Léon Chénier and Malvina Lalonde.
For some reason the parish of St-Grégoire-de-Naziance, Buckingham indicates in their parish register a second marriage for Léon Jr Chénier.
Fourteen days after the birth of his third daughter Marie Malvina Chénier, born 10 Jun 1895 he marries Marie Plouffe, daughter of Marc (or Martin) Plouffe and Mathilde Labelle 24 Jun 1895. Could not find any children of Léon Chénier and Marie Plouffe in Buckingham.
Léon Jr Chénier and Malvina Lalonde continued to have 9 more children. All of these subsequent children show Léon Chénier Jr and Malvina Lalonde as their parents. No mention of Marie Plouffe anywhere.
Doing research for anything on Marie Plouffe a marriage record was found for a person with that same name and same parents was found in the parish of St-Grégoire-de-Naziance, Buckingham.
Marie Plouffe, daughter of Marc (Martin) Plouffe and Mathilde Labelle married to Joseph Arnold Matté, son of Octave Matté & Domitilde Daoust 8 Apr 1894. (See copy of marriage event at Marie Plouffe's particulars)
Could not locate in Buckingham area children of Joseph Arnold Matté and Marie Plouffe. Perhaps they had children elswhere.
Perhaps this is the proper marriage and the one with Léon Chénier was an error entry in the parish register.
How could a father legally marry another women in the middle of having a family? Surely Léon Jr’s second marriage record was an error in the parish register.
However the mystery is compounded with the death record of Marie Plouffe!
At her burial record in the parish of St-Grégoire-de-Naziance, Buckingham the death and burial record indicates she died on the 21 Jun 1896 and buried 23 Jun 1896 AND that she was the wife of Léon Chénier!!
Perhaps Léon Jr’s second marriage was an error BUT a death record for Marie Plouffe stating she was his wife??? This is difficult to believe. One error...possible, two errors... hardly likely!! Mystery?... YES!
If anyone can shed some light on this mystery please contact me: ronchenier@rogers.com.
