I have a copy of Emmanuel Foubert (age 27) and Flavie McGregor's (age 19) Marriage Certificate. It has Andre Foutbert and Hyppolite Chenier as Emmanuel's parents and Robert McGregor and Celina Chenier as Flavie McGregor's parents. Robert McGregor and Angus McGregor are the witnesses in Mattawa. The marriage took place in Mattawa on Jan 23 1886. (Religion: Roman Catholic). Flavie is down as born in the Township of Wright and Emmanuel is born in Buckingham.
On the same page just days before Rosanna Foutbert (age 26) marries Athanse Doucette (age 45) Rosanna's parents are listed as Andre Foubert and Hypolite Chenier. The witnesses are Andre Foubert and Evariste Chenier. The wedding took place in Mattawa on January 17, 1886. Athanse Doucette is born in St. Cuthbert. His parents are Alexis Doucette and Marguerite Deshaie.
We have since been researching some of Emmanuel and Flavie Foubert's children and have seen many of the birth certificates at the LDS in Victoria B.C. so we have confirmed their children if you need that. I believe Robert McGregors parents to be Robert McGregor and Mary Riel. More of Andre and Hyppolite's Children are: Some of this has yet to be varified:

Janvier Chénier
His baptismal name as written in the parish register was Jean-Marie CHENIER.1 He married Philomène DESLOGES-POIRIER, daughter of François DESLOGES-POIRIER and Marie LANTHIER-BOURDEAU, circa 1860.4 He died on 15 April 1925 in Buckingham, QC, Canada, at the age of 885 and was buried on 17 April 1925 in Buckingham, QC.5 Janvier was a farmer. Many have researched for years but it is through Jackie's perseverance and undying dedication in researching Janvier Chénier's connection to his true parents: François Chénier and Adélaïde Paradis that a mystery can now be laid to rest.

Some interesting facts that point Janvier Chénier into the right family.
First of all his cousin Rose (Rosalie) daughter of Charles Chénier and Josephte Legault, born
the 30 Sept. 1851, and Janvier were friends. Théophile Ross, became widowed after
Philomène Daoust died. He married Rosalie (Janvier's first cousin) on 17 June 1871 in
Buckingham. Unfortunately she passed away 9 May 1888 in Buckingham. Théophile Ross was
considerably older than his wife Rose. I believe Théophile was friends with the family in
general.
Théophile and Rose Ross were godparents to Marie Louise Chenay, daughter of Janvier Chénier
and Philomène Desloges on 2nd of April, 1876 in Buckingham, Québec. Théophile Ross was also Gofather to Sarah Marie Desloges. The Godmother of this child
was Philomène Desloges (Sarah's sister).
The two families (Chénier & Paradis) knew each other very well. This was partially based on the fact of the baptism of Jacques Paradis.
It is the fact that there was a double wedding! François Cheney (Chéné or Chénier) & Adélaïde Paradis were married the same day at the same church as Adélaïde’s brother Jean-Marie Paradis (Note the name: Jean-Marie…same as Jean-Marie Chénier who was born 4 years later 17 July 1836…our elusive Janvier).
Simple fact:
Adélaïde Paradis (parents: Jacques Paradis & Marie-Louise Joly) married François Chénier
Jean-Marie Paradis (parents: Jacques Paradis & Marie-Louise Joly) married Marie-Louise Richer
Both marriages occurred in Sainte-Scholastique on 7 May 1832
Photocopies of their marriages as well as transcriptions and translations can be viewed by looking at their personal info on this site.
Because this was a double wedding it adds additional indormation indicating the family really knew each other very well and creates further proof that Jean-Marie Chénier, for whom we have an actual record of birth & baptism is in fact our elusive Janvier Chénier who married Philomène Desloges.
The remainder of this message is to prove that Janvier Chénier who called himself James was
the son of François Chénier and Adélaïde Paradis. The latter also called herself Louise.
First of, all François Chénier (and Emelie Brisebois) were Godparents to Jean Marie Paradis' child
Jacques. Jean Marie is Adélaïde Paradis' brother. So this shows the two families knew each
other very well. This baptism occured in Sainte-Scholastique.
MORE IMPORTANT:
A child Jean-Marie was baptised the 18th of July 1836 in St-Benoit, Québec. He was however born
the previous day to François Chénier and Adélaïde Paradis the previous day in St-Hermas.
These are François and Adélaïde's children:
1. François baptised 30 Apr 1833 in St-Benoit. He died 23 July 1834.
2. Charles baptised 7 Aug. 1834 in Ste-Scholastique.
3. Jean-Marie baptisted 18 July 1836 in St-Benoit.
4. Adélaïde baptised 26 Sept 1838 in St-Benoit. She died 26 Sept 1838.
5. Moïse baptised 8 Feb 1840 in St-Hermas. He died 11 Sept 1843.
6. Noé Joseph baptised 14 July 1841 in St-Hermas. He died 11 Sept 1843
7. Noé baptised 20 April 1846 in St-Andre-Argenteuil.
8. Eléonore Honorine baptised 19 July 1850 in St-Hermas.
9. Louise baptised 16 Aug 1852 in St-Jérôme.
10. Marguerite baptised 2 Nov 1855 St-Jérôme.
**Louise's birth refers to her parents as François Chénier and Louise Paraguay. Louise
Paradis????--and not Adélaïde.
There is not an 1851 census mentioning François and Adélaïde but there is a 1851 census with
François and Louise. They are in St-Filiatrault, Abercrombie, Terrebonne, Québec.
NOTE: Irrefutable proof that François and Adélaïde are also François and Louise:
In this 1851 Census all the living children of François and Adélaïde up to 1850 are mentioned.
The ages of François and Adélaïde are 4 years off. They should be 4 years older but this is not
unusual. First child mentioned is Charles, age 17 (born 1834), Second child is Jean Chénier
(Janvier) age 15, born 1836, the 3rd child mentioned is Noé Chénier, age 6 (born 1845) which
coincides pretty closely to the birth age. The last mentioned is Eléonore, age 3, born 1850
which is bang on.
There is not doubt that François Chénier and Adélaïde Paradis are also François Chénier and
Louise Paradis.
That being said, further proof is the 1891 Buckingham census that connects Janvier and
Philomène to François and Louise. These two who to be 86 and 82 are actually 82 and 78 as
we find out from their death records. Again not unusual. But they are living with Janvier and
Philomène in Buckingham.
This is too big to be a coincidence.
Another find is that Janvier and Philomène are Godparents to Louis Noé Chénier, child of Noé
Chénier, (Janvier's brother). The wife's name is difficult to read but Noé's wife was Eulalie Lanthier.
I personally feel that the above is enough proof for me to fill out the whole lineage.

Godparents: Jean-Baptiste Chéné & Marie Angrignon.1,2 His baptismal name as written in the parish register was Evarice CHENE.1,2 He married Thérèse Flavie LATOUR (VILLIOT-VILLOT), daughter of François Xavier LATOUR and Louise TOUCHETTE, on 20 June 1864 in St-Grégoire-de-Naziance, Buckingham, QC, Canada.3,4 He died on 1 August 1923 in Mattawa, ON, Canada, at the age of 83.5 -Research Notes: After extensive research into Evariste CHENE's real identity I was successful in finding all the necessary data to prove that he is a descendant of Bertrand Chesnay dit Lagarenne and not Jean Chenier and Jacqueline Sedilot.

In the first case I found Charles Chene and Marie Angelique Perrier's marriage. It is listed as marriage no. 46 on the photocopy which I have in my filed records. It is not too difficult to read but to give you some help (as it is much easier to read right off the reader itself) I, with the aide of an assistant have hand written the information. This is attached to the back of the photocopy. This marriage is perhaps the foundation of the record keeping in regards to this matter. This Charles Chene's parents go up the line to Bertrand Chesnay and not up to Jean Chenier.

Next I found Evarice Chéné's (accents from actual record) birth record and who his real parents are: Charles Chene and Marie Perrier. This document is not as legible as the first one. However with an aide again we were able to decipher the data, hand written copy held in my records. The photocopy had to be printed in two then taped together - this was the best way to see it. It is listed as: Baptisme No. 131 on the photocopy which I hold in my records.
DOCUMENT NO.3: (Click on camera icon in his marriage record for image)
Then I found Evarice (Evariste) Chéné and Thérèse Flavie Latour's marriage. This document proved to be the hardest to decipher and there are a few words/lines that could not be read. However, the stangest thing is that this marriage is recorded in English. I guess they had no French Canadian priest in the area at that time. The other information that is important is that they do specify Charles Chene and Marie Poirier as the parents of Evariste Chene, and, Francois Latour and Louise Touchette as the parents of Therese Flavie Latour. The name Poirier is spelled that way and not Perier (Perrier), but names change sometimes when written by different people. It should also be noted that in some cases many of the people concerned in these records could not sign their names hence the miss-spelling by others. However, as this was not conclusive enough I further researched the records in Soulanges, Que. That is, the parish of St.Joseph in the county of Soulanges, Que., sometimes referred to as Les Cedres. Here, I came across an interesting document which to me showed proof that Evariste was the son of Charles Chene and Marie Angelique Perrier and not Charles Joseph Chenier and Marie Poirier.
DOCUMENT NO.4:6
Please click on Citation No. 6 below the list of Family Children to see the photocopy of the burial (and birth record) of a child born around the 3rd of May 1839, (about 9 months after the marriage of Joseph Chénier and Marie Poirier (married 20th Aug 1838 in St.Joseph-de-Soulanges, Les Cèdres, Que), and 28 days after this birth this anonymous child died and was buried in that same parish. Attached burial document to Citation No. 6 refers. This would indicate that Joseph Chénier & Marie Poirier could not have had a child called Evarice in 1839 as Evarice Chéné was born on the 14th Sep that same year (1839) in St.Benoit to the family of Charles Chéné & Marie Angelique Perrier. Drouin Manuals also show a record of these marriages: one shows Charles Chéné marrying Marie Angelique Perrier and the other shows their son Evariste marrying Flavie Latour.
So, in conclusion, it is my firm belief that with these records, Evariste Chéné son of Charles Chéné and Marie Angelique Perrier, grandson of Charles Chéné and Marie Louise Viau and great-grandson of Charles Chéné and Marie Louise Croteau etc. is a descendant of Bertrand Chesnay and Elisabeth Aubert, and not Jean Chenier and Jacqueline Sedilot.
Evariste was a farmer.

WHY MARIE CHÉNÉ HAS ZÉPHIRINE IN HER GIVEN NAME
In some correspondences in the past I was asked who was Zéphirine Chéné? Her name as a stand alone name appears in a death record listed as the spouse of her deceased husband Joseph Labrosse.
In exhaustive research by many, including myself no record of a marriage between a Zéphirine Chéné and a Joseph Labrosse could be found.
In trying to determine who this Zéphirine Chéné might be it was necessary to look at as many birth, marriage and burial records as possible that were related to the original name: that is Marie Chéné.
Her baptism record indicates she was baptised as Marie Chéné
Her marriage record indicates her name as Théotiste Chéné
(Note: her mother’s maiden name was Théotiste Ouellet/Wellet)
Her death record indicates her name as Zéphirine Chéné
Further research into the baptism of her 11 children indicated that in 10 of the baptism records her name as the legitimate mother is Théotiste.
But at the baptism of her sixth child, Marie-des-Neiges Oliose, the name of Zéphirine Chéné is indicated as her legitimate mother
Continuing with more research with the marriages of her children I found that in three of those marriages the name of Zéphirine was used twice and Zéphirina used once: the marriages of Marie Olive Aglaë with Cléophas Giroux, Albine Louise with David Simard and Joseph with Corine Desjardins.
In addition to the previously mentioned events one baptism record of one of her grandchildren, namely Auxilie Zéphirine Wurtell (from the marriage of her daughter Auxilie to John Wurtell) was found where she acted as Godmother. In this act the name Zéphirine is used as a given name for her granddaughter.
It would be difficult to find the exact proof for the use of the given name Zéphirine for Marie Chéné, but with the above mentioned events it is reason enough in finding this name in baptisms, marriages and death to record Zéphirine in her name and that in the last act, namely her death her name was recorded as Zéphirine Chéné, died in 1904, widow of Joseph Labrosse, died 1893.
Where her use of Zéphirine as part of her given names came from no one knows but it is part of her full name recorded through the many events in her life.
It should also be noted that besides the above mentioned event where the name Zéphirine was used as part of Marie Chéné’s given name other possibilities or assumptions to this name might exist. In researching the event in the parishes of St-Benoit, St-Placide and St-André-d’Argenteuil I saw a few baptisms, marriages and burials where the name Zéphirine appears. None were related to the Labrosse families nor to the Chéné/Chénier families. So the use of the name Zéphirine might have been a common name used in those parishes and Marie Chéné just liked it.
Another possibility, more plausible is the actual act of baptism for Marie Chéné. Perhaps her full baptismal name should have been Marie Théotiste Zéphirine Chéné! Maybe in the writing of the act of baptism in the parish register her full name was never entered.

Godparents: Pierre Ménard & Charlotte Givogue(?)2 He married Joséphine VILLENEUVE, daughter of Vincent VILLENEUVE and Marguerite BERTRAND, on 22 October 1860 in St-André-Avellin, St-André-Avellin, QC, Canada.3 He married Olympe LABRE, daughter of Hyacinthe LABRE and Cléophée SEGUIN, circa 1865.4 He married Olive LEBLANC, daughter of Joseph Isidore LEBLANC and Adeline SIGOUIN, on 18 February 1884 in St-Félix-de-Valois, Chénéville, QC, Canada.5 He died on 29 March 1904 in Chénéville, QC, Canada, at the age of 696 and was buried on 4 April 1904 in Chénéville, QC.7,6 Historical Notes: History of the municipality of Chénévile: On August 25, 1902 a request is conveyed to the Town council of the County representing more of two thirds of the inhabitants of the village. The request was simply to ask the Lieutenant-Governor that the indicated territory be set up in a municipality under the name of Village of Chénéville. This request will have as a consequence the dismemberment of the united counties of Hartwell and Preston. The mayor, Henri Lefebvre will be the first signatory, followed by Hercules Chéné. The superintendent notes in his report to have counted seventy two houses, six open and used streets and six others proposed. He recommends the creation of municipality of the village of Chénéville as indicated in the Post Office book and called as such by the surrounding population for a number of years. The name of Chénéville appears for the first time in 1884 to indicate the Post Office of the village of Hartwell. With time, one will say the village of Chénéville. We owe its name to Hercule Chéné. The constitutional act of setting up the municipality was signed on January 22, 1903. At sixty-eight years old Hercules Chéné is elected councilman. In all six councilmen are elected. A seventh will arrive later. The first municipal assembly took place on 2 March 1903. At that time, these councilmen elected the mayor. Hygin Locas is named president of assembly by two councilmen. These same advisers suggest he also be mayor. Two other advisers nominate Hercules Chéné. At the time of the vote on the appointment of Hercules Chéné, there was unanimity. Hygin Locas having voted against, exerts his dominant vote and negates the amendment. He will make the same decision on the main clause, his dominant allows him to become mayor. Hercules Chéné swallows his defeat bitterly. After the 4 January 1904 meeting, Hercule does not return any more to the town hall. Hercules Chéné dies on 29 April 1904 at the 69 years age. Hygin Locas, the first mayor, was a merchant and Master cantor of the parish during thirty years. Henri Lefebvre built the village aqueduct, the telegraph and telephone line in the county and was the civil engineer as a head of The Little Nation River Railway Co. whose registered office was in Chénéville. Wilfrid Parisien owned the Bon Marché General Store where we could find the accountant for the Petite-Nation No 1 Téléphone company and the post office. Antoine Leduc was a blacksmith, Joseph Claystone, stone mason, Eugene Savouring, shoe-maker, Napoleon Laplante, farmer. Cheneville was, a village at the mid point of the Small-Nation. The town's deceased mayors rest in the Saint-Felix-de-Galois parish cemetery, except Henri Lefebvre who is buried in the Saint-Georges parish cemetery in Montreal and Wilfrid Parisien in the Our-Lady cemetery of Ottawa. The municipality has arranged a gallery of photographs of the town's mayors with the intention of contributing to the knowledge and history of Chénéville.

Biographical Notes: Pierre Hercule & his wife Olympe Labre acted as Godparents to Albert Eugène Hercule Joseph Chéné's (his brother, Nicolas Chéné's son) baptism on 18 Jan 1876. The register indicated that Pierre Hercule was an "ecuier" and also was Mayor of Hartwell. Also noted in the microfilm was that the priest wrote the Godfather's name in the register as Chéné, but Hercule signed his name as Chénier.
