Research Notes: Isidore's Baptismal certificate, provided by Hubert Chénier on 30 May 1997 seems to indicate another error in the family surname. On the certificate the surname is spelled CHENEST. It is spelled that way in two places on the document, once in the body of the text and once in the left margin. Also in the left margin, below, it is indicated to read both CHENEST as CHENIER. This notation was specified by a F.X. J. Lortie, priest. The Baptismal ceremony was performed by a L. Almeras, priest.

Louis SMITH, born on 22 August 1862 in Grande-Grave, QC, Canada,1,2 and was baptized on 29 October 1862 in St. Patrick, Douglastown, QC, Canada. Godparents: Louis Lemieux & Catherine Lemieux.1 He married Délia LEFEBVRE, daughter of Antoine Octave LEFEBVRE and Emilie ALLAIRE (ALERE), on 9 November 1891 in Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette, Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette, QC, Canada.3,4,5 He died on 13 April 1929 in Cobalt, ON, Canada, at the age of 666 and was buried on 15 April 1929 at the Ste-Thérèse Cemetery in Cobalt, ON.7
Biographical Notes: Louis seemed to have done a lot of travelling during his time. His exact birth place is not known but it is believed to have been in the town of Gaspé in Gaspé, Qué. From stories passed down to me by Huguette Smith and Murielle Smith it seems that there was no work in the Gaspé area and that around 1889 he left with his brothers John and Isaac to find work north of Buckingham, Qué. where jobs were available in the lumber camps. North of here in the little town of Notre Dame de la Salette he met and married Délia Lefebvre in 1891. There they had their first child, (seven months later!) Louis Antoine Smith. His brothers John and Isaac also married here, John having married Délia's sister, Emilie Lefebvre a year earlier in 1890. Isaac married Eugénie Tremblay from the same town in 1893.
For some unknown reason Louis returned to the Gaspé area. It is not known if his brothers returned with him at that time, but it looks like they remained in Notre Dame de la Salette. Louis, with his wife Délia and their first child Louis Antoine returned to Gaspé to try his life again in that area with the rest of his family. While living back in Gaspé he had three more children: Adhémar, and twin girls, Dolorès & Alvina. Alvina died at childbirth. Again not finding that part of the world too productive for a growing family and trying for about six years to make a go of it he realized it was futile to remain in the Gaspé area. Even Délia is said to have suffered cold and inhospitable winters near the coast and is said to have seen snow come through cracks into their rundown shack by the sea shore.
It was during this time that Louis heard about plenty of work in the Hull area, so he decided to pack things up and leave Gaspé a second time. With his wife Délia, their three children (Louis, Adhémar and Dolorès) and possibly other members of his family they travelled to Hull, Qué. sometime around the end of 1898 or in 1899. During that time Louis must have moved north of Hull because their fifth child, Argentina was born in 1900 in St.Pierre de Wakefield. Again it is assumed that he was working in the lumber camps and that his family was living nearby in Wakefield.
In about 1905 Louis decided to find work in Northern Ontario in the town of Cobalt where his next four children, Walter, Violet (my mother), Romeo and Aldège were all born. This year is recorded in The Northern News newspaper, (issue 18 April 1929), which lists his death on 13 Apr 1929 in Cobalt. He is buried in Ste.Thérèse cemetery, just outside of Cobalt. At the time of his death the place where he was buried was known as Mileage 104, (supposedly 104 miles from North Bay, Ont by rail). Attempts to find his tombstone or burial plot were unsuccessful as forest fires have destroyed all burial plot markings which consisted of wooden crosses. Stone or metal markings were not so ravaged by forest fires that destroyed parts of this area years ago.
It was because of the mining situation in this area at that time that attracted Louis to Cobalt. It was a booming town and plenty of work was available. In Cobalt he had 6 children, of which Violet Ethel Smith (my mother) was one of them.

François-Xavier CHENE, born on 7 June 1813 in St-Benoit, QC, Canada,1,2,3 and was baptized on 7 June 1813 in St-Benoit, St-Benoit, QC, Canada. Godparents: Jacques Lacasse & Marguerite Groux.1,3 His baptismal name as written in the parish register was François Xavier CHENE.1
Research Notes:SURNAME SPELLING: Records searched at the Société Généalogique de l'Outaouais (SGO) in Hull on the 5th of Jun 1997 indicate on his baptismal record that his name was spelled as CHENÉ, and not CHÉNIER. This information was found on SGO MFM No. 0407, with the index on MFM No. 0406. It also indicated that François-Xavier's father's surname was also spelled as CHENÉ. Please see photocopy of baptism record at his baptism record. At this point in time it becomes apparent that most did not read or write as they were predominantly labourers & farmers. This was therefore left to the local priests as to how the surnames were written. And, as sheep follow sheep it looks as though the priests spelled the surnames the way they were written in the parish registers, thus THE reason my family name subsequently became CHÉNIER.
He married Judith (Julie) (Angélique) LALANDE, daughter of François LALANDE dit LATREILLE and Julie ST-DENIS, on 28 July 1840 in St-Benoit, QC.4,5,6 He died on 28 October 1868 in Curran, ON, Canada, at the age of 55.7,8 His name at the time of death was written as François CHENET7 and was buried on 1 November 1868 in Curran, ON.7,8 François-Xavier was a farmer.

Urgèle (Eugène) CHENIER, born on 26 April 1860 in Curran, ON, Canada.
Important Note: It is possible that the birth name for Urgèle Chénier may have been written down as Eugène Chénier by the parish priest in the church records. Looking for further records for Eugène Chénier from this family revealed nothing. No marriage or death record can be found for a Eugène Chénier from this family. Therefore I have indicated Urgèle's birth date as 26 Apr 1860 and his baptism as 27 Apr 1860 (dates found under the name of Eugène Chénier). I believe Urgèle Chénier and Eugène Chénier are the same person.1,2,3,4
He was baptized on 27 April 1860 in St-Luc, Curran, ON, Canada. Godparents: Eustache Bertrand & Marguerite Chénier.1,4 His baptismal name as written in the parish register was Eugène CHENET.1 As of 27 August 1888, his married name was Urgèle CHENIER.5 He married first: Marie Louise BLONDIN, daughter of Lalonde Alexandre BLONDIN and Olive BEAUVAIS, on 27 August 1888 in St-Paul, Plantagenet, ON, Canada.5,6 He, married secondly: Rosalie COURSOL, widow of Jean B. Additional information of interest on Bertrand: On 11 August 1666, the sailing ship Le Saint-Jean-Baptiste anchored opposite Quebec at the mouth of the Saint-Charles River, François Nau disembarked and left immediately by canoe for the Manor of Lotinville with his master Bertrand Chesnay de la Garenne. There was no road and no bridge over the Montmorency River. Having reached Ange-Gardien, he had to paddle up the Petit-Pré River, also called Lotinville River, up to the embankment in front of the Manor of the Seigneur de Lotinville.
It is here, at the Manor, that Francois became a servant or hired hand with eight other colleagues. They contributed to making the domain one of the most beautiful of the Beaupré region. The domain measured 6 arpents (350 meters or 1200 feet) wide. Bertrand Chestnay was one of the most prosperous business man in the colony at that time.
The second farm to the east belonged to the Jobidon Family. Marguerite, who was only 5 years old when François arrived, would become his wife. She was fifteen when they married at Château-Richer on 20 July 1676.

Fief de Lotinville: In a book entitled: Histoire du Fief de Lotinville, by Lionel LaBerge it details very extensively on the history of the Fief of Lotinville from 1652 to 1690. This book is 345 pages long and goes into minute details about the creation of the land known as Lotinville and later of the selling off of the possessions once held by Bertrand Chesnay, after his death. It is so detailed that it includes the sale of desk artifacts, wall hangings etc, etc.
First about its proper spelling. According to LaBerge, it has been spelled many ways: Lotinville, Lottinville, Lothinville, Lotainville, Lothainville, etc. LaBerge has adopted the spelling of Lotinville as found in documents relating to the legal transactions of the land or seigneurie. So...I too have changed my records to reflect the proper spelling to Lotinville.
Laberge, in his book, Histoire du Fief de Lotinville begins back in 1608 when Samuel de Champlain first came down the St.Lawrence River. Then he goes into the colonization period where land was given to well-to-do French settlers. This was commonly known as the "Seigneurial" system. In this book we find that Jean de Lauzon was given a large piece of land near L'Ange-Gardien and Château Richer in Sep 1652, about 10 miles east of the town of Québec. This land he named Lotinville in honour of his grandmother, Isabelle Lotin, dame de Charny. So, this is the origin of the name Lotinville. It was situated in the parish of L'Ange-Gardien on a point of land called Longue-Pointe.
In his book LaBerge tells of the constant fighting and killings with the Iroquois. In the spring of 1661 Jean de Lauzon went with the assistance of 7 or 8 companions to help his brother-in-law on the "Ile d'Orléans". On the 22nd of Sep 1661 Jean de Lauzon was killed by the Iroquois.
Thereafter the Fief de Lotinville was in 'limbo" until about 1664, when court proceedings were carried out with regards to the sale of it to 3 prospective buyers. The first was Antoine Berson, sieur de Chastillon who offered to sum of 1,100 "livres" (a base price of 1000 "livres" was probably set), next came Charles Lefrançois with a sum of 1,200 "livres". Interestingly after this offer Berson backed out, leaving Lefrançois and Bertrand Chesnay, sieur de la Garenne to vie for the Fief de Lotinville. Finally on the 30th Aug 1664 for the sum of 2,850 "livres" the Fief de Lotinville had a new owner...Bertrand Chesnay dit Lagarenne, Sieur du Fief de Lotinville.
Bertrand was a merchant in the the town of Québec and areas. He was also a land owner near Châtea-Richer as depicted by the land map circa 1680's. Château-Richer was the second place inhabited by French settlers in the Côté-de-Beaupré by the French colonists as an agricultural community to provide crops for the Ville de Québec. (The first was Saint-Joachim.) Colony-related farming was started there by Champlain as early 1626, but habitation really began in the 1640's under Olivier Letardif. Today it is situated between L'Ange-Gardien, and Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré along the St. Lawrence River.
