Marie Josèphe CHESNAY, born circa 1702 in Port-Royal, Acadie.1 She married Charles CHARPENTIER circa 1723 in St-Pierre-du-Nord, Isle St-Jean, Acadie.2 As of 1723, her married name was Marie-Josephe CHENET DIT LAGARENNE.3 She married Jean-François MOREL, son of Jean MOREL and Françoise BRIAND, on 4 August 1739 in St-Pierre-du-Nord, Isle St-Jean.4 She died on 13 November 1764 in Sinnamary, French Guyana.5
Biographical Notes: Due to the Acadian dispersal in the 1750's Marie Josephe Chesnay, widow of Charles Charpentier and her children: Georges, Louis and Joseph disembarked at St-Malo, France on 9 March 1759 from the ship, du Supply. Marie Josephe Chesnay, widow of Charles Charpentier resided with her family in the parish of St-Servan, 1759 to 1764. In 1764 Marie Josephe Chesnay went to Cayenne, French Guyana on the ship, Le Fort. In 1765 Marie Josephe Chesnay's son, Georges and the entire family went to the Falkland Islands on the ship, L'Aigle. On 28 Oct 1771, Anne Cyr, wife of Georges Charpentier and her children: Geneviève, Théotiste, Alexandre, Joseph and Claire Charpentier arrived at St-Malo from Bordeaux. Georges Charpentier, husband of Anne Cyr arrived at St-Malo on 1 Jan 1772 from Nantes where he had disembarked on 20 Dec 1771 from the Falkland Islands.
Acadian Church Records of Port Royal 1702-1721 at NAC book no. CS88A2A2 Vol 3 indicate that she acted as Godmother at the baptism of Marguerite-Louise Samson, daughter of Gabriel Samson & Jeanne Martin on 6 Oct 1715. The baptism was done by necessity by Sieur St.Seine in the absence of Fr. Duran. Marie Josephe Chesnay would have been about 17 years old at the time of this baptism and was not yet married. The Godfather is recorded as Joseph Gravin. She also acted as Godmother to a baptism of Charles Poitier, born 19 Jan 1725 in Port-Royal and baptised in Port-Royal 1 Jul 1725. He was the son of Jean Poitier and Marie Chiasson. Godfather was Jean Boudet. Records on Microfim F-595 BMD of Port Royal at the National Archives of Ottawa. It is also possible that she acted as Godmother again to the birth of Dominique CARRIKA(?), son of Pierre CARRIKA(?) & Suzanne Moreau, born 15 Nov 1727 and baptised 25 Nov 1727 in St-Pierre-du-Nord. Her name at this event was written down as Marie Lagarenne dit Chenay, quite likely Marie Josephe Chesnay. In this document she has signed her name. Records also indicate that she acted as Godmother to Angélique Veco, born 9 Aug 1728 and baptised 22 Aug 1728 in St.Pierre du Nord, Ile St.Jean, Acadie. Angélique was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Veco and Marie Chiasson. Angélique's Godfather was Mathurin Renaud. In this document her name is written as M.J. Chesnay. Again, records indicate that she acted as Godmother to Joseph Chiasson, born 8 May 1733 and baptised 25 May 1733 in st.Pierre du Nord, Ile St-Jean, Acadie. Joseph was the son of François Chiasson and Anne Doucet.

Jean Baptiste CHESNAY, born in 1700 in Port-Royal, Acadie.1 He married Anne POTIER, daughter of Jean POTIER and Marie Magdeleine CHIASSON, on 19 October 1728 in St-Pierre-du-Nord, Isle St-Jean, Acadie.2 He died before 1767.
Biographical Notes: Jean-Baptiste Chenay settled on L'île St-Jean, today known as Prince Edward Island, specifically in Hâvre-aux-Sauvages. This land was given to him by MM Duchambon & Dubuisson. In this area Jean-Baptiste became a farmer and a fisherman, if his crop failed or the harvest was little he would rely on his fishing. Records indicate that in 1752 he did not cultivate his farm. Source: Histoire et Généalogie des Acadiens (Port Royal) by Bona Arsenault. Where have they all settled to? Information from Rose-Marie ("Ronne" Chenette) Harshman on 16 Mar 1998 shows it might be possible that Jean-Baptiste's son, Joseph (Chenet), married Isabelle Thibodeau. Same location and time period, but no proof so far. They had a son, Alexis Chenet, (Joseph?) who, according to Rose-Marie Harshman served for 12 years on a British frigate after the Acadian deportation. Rose-Marie also says that a Patrice Poirier and Joan Lucas, also researching the descendants of Bertrand Chesnay dit Lagarenne both show Joseph Chenet and Isabelle Thibodeau as the parents of Alexis Chenet and seem to think they connect with Bertrand Chesnay. It would be nice to see what proof they have to make this connection. Patrice apparently has read a book written by a nun about the family. Patrice says that Joseph died at the age of 32 during the dispersal of the Acadians aboard the English ships. Greg Piasetski, another descendant, has hired a researcher to look into the Acadian Chesnay dit Lagarenne family to see if he can get an answer to the problem.
Additional Information on Jean-Baptiste Chesnay, sometimes spelled Chainay/Chesnay:
Jean Chainay, fisherman, native of l'Acadie, aged 50 years, has been in the country 25 years. Married to Anne Poitier, native of l'Acadie, aged 40 years. They have five children, three sons and two daughters:-
Jean Baptiste, aged 22 years. Joseph, aged 12 years. Charles, aged 9 years. Geneviève, aged 5 years. Marie, aged 4 years. Note: Read IMPORTANT NOTE further below regarding children's ages above. Their livestock consists of two oxen, two cows, two calves, twelve ewes, and eight pigs. The land upon which they are settled is situated at the harbour aux Sauvages. They hold it under a grant from Messieurs Duchambon and Dubuisson. They have made a clearing on it for the sowing of thirty-two bushels of seed, but have sown none.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Le Sr. Louis Bernard, fisherman and ploughman, native of Chartres in Beauce, aged 52 years, he has been __ years in the country. Married to Magdelaine Simon, native of Louisbourg, aged 34 years.
They have five children, four sons and one daughter:-
Louis Bernard, aged 16 years. Pierre, aged 10 years. Hustache, aged 3 years. Simon, aged 9 months. Anne, aged 11 years.
They have in livestock two oxen and two ewes.
They hold the land by purchase for the sum of 80 livres from Jean Chesnay, as appears by certificate from the said Chesnay under date of 1738. They have made a clearing for the sowing of twenty bushels and have sown nothing for three years, having no seed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Sieur de la Roque's census of 1752 gives erroneous dates of ages for some of Jean Baptiste's children. The church records on microfilm C-2970 at the National Archives in Ottawa show the proper birth dates for his following children: Jean Baptiste, Joseph, Charles, Marie Elizabeth Geneviève, Claire. I have not found birth records in St.Pierre du Nord, Isle St.Jean for his following children: L'Ange Cécile. Though Cécile's name has been found elsewhere. One of his children was named Ange and born in 1738, but died in 1739.

GODPARENTS IN PORT ROYAL: Jean Chesnay & Anne Comeau, wife of François Richard acted as Godparents for Jeanne Samson, born 22 Oct 1719 and baptised 29 Oct 1719. Jeanne Samson was the daughter of Gabriel Samson & Jeanne Martin. SOURCE: Port Royal (Acadian Church Records) Vol IV Port Royal 1716-1729. By Milton P. Reider Jr & Norma Gaudet Reider (Salle Gagnon, Montreal, 4 Aug 1999) NOTE: Jeanne Martin was the widow of Louis Chesnay dit Lagarenne

Jean Baptiste LAGARENNE (CHESNAY), born on 23 October 1732 in St-Pierre-du-Nord, Isle St-Jean, Acadie,1,2 and was baptized on 11 February 1733 in St-Pierre-du-Nord, Isle St-Jean. Biographical Notes: Jean Baptiste Chenet (Chesnay) acted as Godfather to one of the twins to Jean Baptiste Galet and Marie Josephte Chenet (Chesnay). Their names were Guillaume and Louis. Jean Baptiste Chenet and Marguerite Acher were Godparents to Guillaume Galet. Both twins were born 3 May 1753 and baptised 13 May 1753 in St-Pierre-du-Nord, Ile St-Jean, Acadie.
It is possible that this is the Jean Baptiste who was shipped on the 11 Jun 1785 from Nantes, France with his wife, Anne Doiron arriving 69 days later in New Orleans, Louisiana on 19 Aug 1785. Prior to leaving Nantes it is recorded that the two lived in Chatellerault, France until March 1776 (Source: Gérard-Marc Braud's book: Les Acadiens en France, (NAC, Ottawa, Canada)

Passenger List for Le Beaumont
The small 180 ton Le Beaumont was led by Captain Daniel and left France on June 11, 1785. They made the trip in only 69 days and arrived in Louisiana on August 19, 1785. There were 51 families (178 people) scheduled for the trip. On the way, there were 2 deaths. While in New Orleans, the group further increased by 7 (1 birth, and 6 adults) and decreased by 6 (4 died, and 2 deserted). When it came time to settle down: 41 families settled near Baton Rouge, 5 families went to the Attakapas, and 3 families chose to settled along Bayou Lafourche.
Among the many names shown in the passenger list of Le Beaumont here are the two that pertain to my line:
Jean Baptiste LAGARENNE, plowman - 55
Anne DOIRON, wife - 46

Research Notes: Godparents: Pierre Belleaire and Anne Lagarenne. Interesting! Anne Lagarenne! Would she have been Louis Chesnay dit Lagarenne's sister? Hardly likely....she would have been around 70 years old in 1744. Anne Chesnay dit Lagarenne, sister of Louis Chesnay dit Lagarenne was born in 1674. So then, who is this Anne Lagarenne? The first Geneviève Chesnay, born 10 Oct 1744 may have died as there was another Geneviève born 10 years later on 7 Feb 1754 to Jean Baptist & Anne Poitier. It could have been Anne (Doiron) Lagarenne, wife of Jean Baptist Chesnay (dit Lagarenne), Geneviève's brother's wife. This is very difficult to determine exactly who Anne Lagarenne is.
