George Samuel OTHMER
#24952
Father* | (?) OTHMER |
George Samuel OTHMER was born on 11 April 1838 in Hanover, Germany, and emigrated to Canada in 1863 where he settled in the province of Québec possibly near the town of Buckingham or Mulgrave et Derry.1,2,3 He married Ruth Delaney LEMIEUX circa 1869 in Buckingham, QC, Canada.1 He died on 16 July 1916 at the age of 78 in Glen Almond, QC, Canada,
Othmer, George (1838-1916)
George Othmer, an old and respected resident of Glen Almond, QC, was found dead on the floor of his house on Sunday at noon. Mr. Othmer has for years run a sawmill at Glen Almond and while the mill was in operation he lived in a house built near the mill. The family home is a few miles away on a farm (in Derry) and he left home on Saturday to go to the mill to dispose of some lumber. He was last seen alive on Saturday and on Sunday he was found by Mrs Judge who stopped at the mill on her way home to inquire about some lumber. Mr. Othmer was apparently in the best of health when he left home and it is supposed that the prevalent excessive heat proved too much for his vitality.
Mr. Othmer was born in Hanover, Germany, on April 11, 1838 and was consequently in his 79th year. His widow (Lemieux) and 13 children all grown up, are left to mourn his loss. They are Messrs. William, George, Herman, James, Fred, Alphonse and Ernest Othmer, and Mrs. Beilhartz, of Blanche, Quebec, Mrs. Brown of Ste.Anne de Bellevue, Mrs. Woodstock, Val-des-Bois, Mrs Valley, Glen Almond, and Misses Rose Other at Beaconsfield, and Helen at home.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon from the family home to St.Stephen's Church where the service was conducted by Rev. Mr. A. Lupton after which the remains were interred in the Anglican Cemetery. The pallbearers being Messrs. George Wallingford, John Lonsdale, George MacLeod, Richard Chartrand, Joseph Valley and Pat Gorman.1
and was buried on 18 July 1916 at the Anglican Cemetery in Buckingham, QC.
Research Notes: In searching for official documentations on the origins in Canada of George Othmer the only documents found so far are the Canadian Census returns of 1891, 1901 and 1911.
In the census of 1891 it indicates his place of birth as being Germany. His religion as being a Lutheran. His occupation at the time of the census stated he was a farmer. In the 1901 Census it indicated his birth date as being 11 Apr 1838. An accompanying document with the 1901 Canadian Census, acquired through AncestryLibrary.com - Canadian Immigration Records, Part One website sates that George immigrated to Canada in 1863.
Further research at the National Library and Archives Canada (LAC) in Ottawa revealed that Canada did not maintained official immigration records at that time. Further research into Passenger Ships Lists hoping to find the passenger boat George came to Canada on ended in a dead end, government wise.
The government did not begin keeping immigrant records until 1865 for ships arriving in Québec City, 1880 for ships arriving in Halifax, NS and 1900 for ships arriving in St.John's NB. There are many private website with Passenger Ships Lists but this would entail looking at all passengers who arrived in Canada during the year 1863, which could be very time consuming.

History of the ghost town of Argentite:
Name: Argentite
County: District of Timiskaming, Bucke twp
Roads: 2WD
Grid: 1
Climate: Snow in winter, warm summers
Best Time To Visit: April-October
Comments: Directly south of North Cobalt, the town site was situated along Farr creek and farther east of the creek, and west of the present day ONR line. 1km north of Cobalt on Hwy11B
Remains: Nothing, but a few vague cellars.
It began as an independant town site during the Cobalt silver strikes (1903-14). During this massive boom period Cobalt counted 8500 people, and New Liskeard and Haileybury both shared another 10 000 together. Other centre such as North Cobalt, contained another 2500. Argentite was another townsite laid in anticipation of a further need for land, and it developped well. The site contained nearly 500 residents at its peak, and by 1910, counted a few businesses. A post office opened in 1908 for 14 months simply to be moved a few yards north to North Cobalt. When the Nipissing Central Railway ran its tramway from Cobalt to New Liskeard, Argentite received the line through its town site enabling many to communte. A flag station was also established at Argentite Crossing. While the Cobalt silver boom fadded by the 1920's mines were running out of ore. When the Great Fire of Haileybury in 1922 whipped its furry in the area it razed Argentite to the ground, and it never recovered.
in Argentite, ON, Canada. She married Ernest Edmund OTHMER, son of George Samuel OTHMER and Ruth Delaney LEMIEUX, on 26 November 1919 in ON, Canada.
