Originally Cap-des-Trois-Rivières, the location was renamed Cap-de-la-Madeleine by Abbé La Ferté (of Sainte-Marie-Madleine-de-Châteaudun, diocese of Rouen, France), to whom the seigniory was granted in 1636 and who donated the land to the Jesuits in 1682. Incorporated as a town in 1918, became a city in 1923.
