The North West Mounted Police established Fort Brisebois (named for its commanding officer) at the junction of the Bow and Elbow rivers in 1875. The name was later changed to Calgary, from the name of a location on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. Exact interpretation of the original Gaelic is lost; however, a meaning once ascribed, "clear running water", is incorrect. May possibly refer to a stone enclosure since there is an outcropping on Mull which, from a distance, resembles a stone dyke.
