Named for the river and falls. The name is of undoubted Amerindian origin, possibly from the Huron word meaning "thunder of waters" or "resounding with great noise". The name of the town at the falls was Clifton until 1881, when it became Niagara Falls. It was incorporated as a city in 1904.
