The d'Aillesboust family traded with the Amerindians on the Ottawa River from 1670 to 1760. The fort was probably erected about 1680, being named after Nicolas d'Aillesboust de Coulonge-de-la-Madeleine. Appears on Arrowsmith map of 1832.
