The names appears on the Bellin map of 1744. It is probably derived from the name of a ship, the Griffon.
This village is of importance in the history of fishing in the Gaspé. In 1840, John LeBoutillier from Jersey built warehouses for salt, flour and salt cod in order to take charge of the commercial fishing. In 1860, he also had a magnificent manor built.
