Jacob Englehart insisted that this place be named for Fred Schumacher, a Danish patent medicine producer living in Ohio. Schumacher had invested heavily in Porcupine properties in 1912, gaining a considerable fortune in the process. Also the Schumacher Mine, now part of the city of Timmins was named after him.
