In 1793 John Graves Simcoe selected "the forks of the Thames" as his choice for a future capital of the province. The name was applied first (1799) to the District (after London, England). The present location was selected as the administrative centre for the region January 30, 1826. Appears as New London on 1793 Map of the River Tranche, now the Thames. Survived an attempt at being renamed Georgina on the Thames. Became an incorporated town in 1840 and achieved city status January 1, 1855.
