There are two possibilities for the origin of this name:
(1) Honours Commodore Robert Barrie, a British naval officer, who served as Acting Commissionner of the Navy at Kingston;
or
(2) For captain A. Barry, who commanded the 15th Regiment of York. The regiment travelled through the area while transporting stores to Penetanguishene.
