Area was settled by disbanded soldiers from the Glengarry Fencibles in 1804. The townsite was first known as Priest's Mills, marking the residence of the Rev. Alexander Macdonnell (1762-1840), chaplain of the regiment and later designated Roman Catholic bishop of Kingston, the first such appointment in the province. In 1819 the name was changed to Alexandria, an adaptation of Father Macdonnell's Christain name.
