The area near the Etchemin Lake was first discovered by the surveyor William Henderson in 1828. A few years later, in 1835, the region sees its first settler, Sir Randolph Routh, who buys 9,000 acres (36 km²) of land.
Municipality of Lac-Etchemin was created in 2001 by the merger of the City of Lac-Etchemin and the Parish of Sainte-Germaine-du-Lac-Etchemin.
